Patricia Voulgaris at MARYMARY projects PRESS RELEASE

MARYMARY projects is pleased to announce the exhibition

Patricia Voulgaris The Hunter

OPENING RECEPTION

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 12, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13 BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

TEN JAY STREET TRIBECA

In this new work, Patricia Voulgaris continues her probe of the body, but with raw urgency and aggression, revoking the cheerful, reassuring color of her previous work. The photographs feel conversely improvisational and ritualistic, their secretiveness not of shame but of menace.

Andre Breton has suggested that "Beauty will be convulsive or not at all…convulsive beauty will be be veiled-erotic, fixed-explosive, magic-circumstantial”. Voulgaris posits the photograph as ceremony, abandoning explicit purpose for catharsis, sharing this delirious beauty with the viewer.

Patricia Voulgaris is an artist and educator from New York. Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions including those at the Aperture Foundation, Rubber Factory, Red Hook Labs, The Light Factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Houston Center for Photography and Baxter Street at CCNY. Her photographs have been featured in publications such as Dear Dave, magazine, Der Greif, Vice, The British Journal of Photography and T: The New York Times. She has received support from The Lucie Foundation and the Aaron Siskind Foundation and is presently on the faculty at the School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
